The City of Appleton Department of Utilities has an opening for a Relief Operator/ Maintenance Helper. This is a technically skilled position responsible for the operation of the raw water pump station, water treatment plant, water towers, reservoirs, standpipes, and distribution system pumping stations, and in the maintenance of water treatment equipment. The Appleton Water Treatment Facility utilizes lime-softening, coagulation, dual media filtration, ultraviolet light and chloramination disinfection processes to produce a high-quality water. Work involves monitoring all phases of the water treatment process including maintaining appropriate water elevations, pressures, and chemical dosages. The relief operator drains and refills basins, starts and stops chemical feed equipment and operates low and high lift pumps. Maintenance work involves preventive tasks or assistance in corrective repair activities of treatment processes, and pumping equipment; performing general upkeep and cleaning of water treatment facilities and equipment; and acting as a Water Plant Operator to fill-in for Water Plant Operators when scheduled. The Relief Operator reports to the Water Operations Supervisor.

Qualifications

This position requires education beyond high school in water treatment technology, with WDNR Surface Water certification preferred. Requires one to two years of operating experience in a water treatment facility, manufacturing environment, industrial maintenance environment or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must obtain a WDNR Surface Water Operator 1 certification within 18 months of employment.

Hours

The typical schedule for this position is Monday – Friday 7am – 3pm, but when covering for operator vacancies this position is required to work shift work, weekends, and holidays.

Salary

The hiring range is $25.9579 – 32.1878/hourly with the ability to earn up to $36.3411/hourly, plus an excellent fringe benefit package.
