Holton Street Clinic, recently known as STD Specialties Clinic, has operated since 1983. Originally a program of St. Anthony’s Hospital, the Clinic was started primarily as a response to community concern over herpes outbreaks which were at an epidemic level. The Clinic rapidly evolved and began testing for a wide array of sexually transmitted infections in addition to herpes. With the onset of the HIV crisis, the Clinic expanded its testing and referral for treatment to include this devastating illness. The Clinic operated at a few locations before securing its current site on Holton Street in 1993.
The Organization’s mission is “To provide specialized healthcare to all populations, with actual or perceived sexually transmitted infections through consultation, testing, treatment, and follow-up with compassion and understanding in a respectful and confidential manner.”
Holton Street Clinic is currently one of the largest HIV testing sites in Wisconsin. Staff perform over 1200 HIV tests annually in the Clinic as well as at numerous outreach sites, including local gay bars. In addition to HIV testing, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a full range of sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, trichamonis, herpes, and HPV) is provided along with free immunizations for Hepatitis A and B as well as Hepatitis C screening.
