“Out of Chaos (Khaos) came Gaia,” the first earth goddess. Out of charcoal, prepared board, and the talented artistry of Alice McMahon, came a dynamic representation of the goddess of unity, peace, and environmental concern.
Gaia is just one goddess in an evocative and powerful series of mythological portraits painted by McMahon. Each one is based on a living model for pure magic realism. Each goddess has an engaging story from the distant past still relevant to modern lives. Myth, mysticism, and nature work their magic into her drawings in charcoal or pastel on “unconventional surfaces.” Her work has won awards nationally, and international exhibits featured her drawings at the Saatchi Gallery in London, UK, and also in Austria and in Turin, Italy.
McMahon’s work at Longbranch Gallery will on display until October 1.
