L.E.A.D. Webinar: Leadership Transition Readiness - What Every Nonprofit Board Should Know Before the Executive Seat Is Empty
October 15, 2026 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Description
Join us for our L.E.A.D. Webinar on October 15 called "Leadership Transition Readiness: What Every Nonprofit Board Should Know Before the Executive Seat Is Empty" led by Josh Kilgas and JD Gildemeister of Solutions for Changemakers.
If the executive director of a nonprofit you serve couldn't come in tomorrow, would the board know what to do?
For most, the honest answer is no. In BoardSource's national Leading with Intent study, nearly 2 in 3 nonprofits had no written plan for a leadership departure, whether expected or sudden. Yet 1 in 10 executives expects to leave within a year, and nearly 3 in 10 within three.
A leadership transition is one of the highest-risk moments a nonprofit will face, and one of the few times a board must go well beyond its normal role. Handled well, the mission continues without missing a beat. Handled poorly, the costs are real: stalled operations, lost funding relationships, staff turnover, and damaged community trust.
In this hour, we'll focus on the executive transition: what boards should have in place before one happens, how to prepare for both the planned and the unexpected, and where the board has to step up during a transition. Board members will leave knowing the questions to ask and the tools to put in place now. Nonprofit staff leaders will leave with a way to raise this with their board now, not in the middle of a transition.
Whether you serve on a nonprofit board, lead one, or expect to do either someday, you'll leave better prepared for a moment every organization eventually faces.
